Overview
De Montfort University (DMU) has been ranked twice in the top 150 young universities in the world by Times Higher Education (THE) University Rankings. Founded in 1869 in the city of Leicester, England, it is now home to over 22,000 students, including over 2,700 international students from 130 countries.
DMU’s four faculties collectively offer over 300 programmes in fields including arts, engineering, media, business, computing and law. Available at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels, the programmes are crafted to develop globally employable skills.
The university received a gold ranking in the Teaching Excellence Framework 2017, reflecting its excellence in teaching quality and student experience. Known for its innovation and research-driven education, DMU adopts international standards and specialists for over 60% of its research.
Students of DMU have the unique opportunity to participate in international academic trips and volunteering services through the #DMUglobal international experience programme. This programme was also awarded by THE in 2016 under the Outstanding International Strategy category.
Outside of its classrooms, students can benefit from DMU’s three facility centres that boast swimming pools, gyms, sports halls with courts, dance studio, a rock-climbing wall and more. The university has invested GBP 2.5 million in its Beaumont Park centre which includes a 3G sports pitch, grass pitches and clubhouse. Students can also utilise safe and modern accommodation facilities offered by DMU’s 12 halls of residences.
With a dedicated International Student Support Team, DMU provides counselling and network building services to international students. DMU also offers many scholarships and discounts of up to GBP 6,000 for international students based on merit, sports and early application.

What's new
De Montfort University (DMU) is frequently recognised for its excellence in several areas. In 2017, it placed within Times Higher Education magazine’s list of the worlds’ 150 best young universities; the Universities and Colleges Admissions Service (UCAS) has previously named DMU as one of the top ten most popular UK universities for home and EU students; and results produced by the 2018 National Student Survey stated that student satisfaction at DMU is above average in comparison to other universities in the UK, due to its score of 86%.
It’s not just the university which is recognised as a great place for students. Major banking company, NatWest, produced a ranking which named Leicester as the third most affordable student city in the UK, based on how much time and money is spent on accommodation, bills, food, studying and socialising
Teaching quality
In the UK’s 2017 Teaching Excellence Framework (TEF), higher education experts assessed De Montfort University (DMU) as a provider of “consistently outstanding teaching, learning and outcomes for its students. It is of the highest quality found in the UK.”
DMU was ranked as the fifth best university in the UK for teaching excellence in a league table created by higher education specialists, Wonkhe, based on the TEF results. The university also placed first in England for assisting students with securing professional work or further studies.
A lot of this recognition is in thanks to many of the university’s award-winning academic staff. Academics and their teams have recently been awarded esteemed teaching prizes: Dr Angela O’Sullivan from the Faculty of Health and Life Sciences won a Collaborative Award for Teaching Excellence from Advance HE; and Dr Jo Rushworth, a senior lecturer in Biochemistry, was awarded a National Teaching Fellowship.
Department structure
There are four separate faculties at De Montfort University, providing over 400 courses from foundation to postgraduate level. All courses commence in September, with several additional start dates in January.
The Faculty of Arts, Design and Humanities offers programmes which span architecture, arts, design, fashion, textiles and humanities. Guest lectures have featured Jimmy Choo and Adele Parks.
The Faculty of Business and Law covers accounting, law, politics, business, marketing and more. Courses are tailored to industry needs and include optional study abroad years at partner institutions.
The Faculty of Health and Life Sciences provides numerous accredited or professionally-endorsed healthcare courses, sufficiently preparing students with specialist knowledge and skills.
The Faculty of Technology’s course provision ranges from forensic computing to radio production. Plenty of practical experience is incorporated into courses, helping students to develop into graduates with qualities that are highly attractive to employers.
There is also the Leicester School of Pharmacy, which delivers a number of professionally accredited courses, and boasts over 100 years of education.
Entry requirements
There are different entry requirements to De Montfort University (DMU), depending on the students’ country of origin. For undergraduate students whose first language is not English, they will have to supply an IELTS certificate (with a score of 6.0–7.5, depending on the course) or equivalent. If students cannot meet the language requirements they can take a pre-sessional intensive English course in the summer before the semester begins.
Courses are run by the Centre for English Language Learning which is accredited by the British Council and is a member of the British Association for Lecturers in English for Academic Purposes.
The centre also provides assistance to students during their studies. It has a number of learning facilities including a language lab, interactive whiteboards and AV equipment.
Other routes towards undergraduate and postgraduate degrees from DMU include integrated pathway programmes. Working with Oxford International Education Group, De Montfort University International College provides the early stages of International Incorporated Bachelor's, Pre-Top Up programmes, and the International Incorporated Master's programmes. These have several start dates over the academic year and include a lot of information, education and support to help students strengthen their English academic skills.
Scholarships & funding
A number of scholarships are available for eligible international students at De Montfort University (DMU). This includes the Principal’s Scholarship for Leicester Castle Business School, which awards GBP 3,000 to eligible students who have accepted an offer for certain courses taught by the school.
In addition, there are a number of different sports scholarships on offer. Up to GBP 6,000 can be awarded to talented and ambitious individuals.
International students can also take advantage of the early deposit payment scheme, which awards a discount of up to GBP 3,000 to those who pay their deposits far in advance.
DMU allows students to pay tuition fees either in full at the beginning of the course, or through one of the installment plans. Both plans require a payment of 50% of the year’s tuition fees within four weeks of enrolling on a course. The remainder can be paid in either three or seven installments across the academic year.

Work experience and placements
DMU offer a range of opportunities for our international students to gain work experience during their studies.
Work placements
The majority of our undergraduate degrees offer students the opportunity to take a work placement as part of their course, as well as all of our postgraduate Computing and Engineering courses. This is an optional 12 month placement that will be relevant to the course.
How do I find a work placement?
Once you join DMU a student will receive access to our online careers portal, making it easy to browse for placements and internship schemes. Our dedicated Careers and Employability Team can also support and provide professional workshops, interview presentations, and host talks by companies who offer placement schemes.
Is the placement paid?
The work placement is paid and past students have earned between £13,000 and £18,000 and worked for organisations such as Microsoft, IBM, BMW, Calvin Klein, O'Neill, 3M and GlaxoSmithKline. The fee to undertake a placement year is £750.
Is the placement guaranteed?
Places are competitive and the outcome is decided by the employer so we cannot guarantee a work placement.
Is a placement included in the student visa?
To express an interest in undertaking a one-year work placement, a student must complete our online form, and if eligible, we can issue a CAS letter that includes both the duration of the studies and placement.
What happens if a student doesn't find a placement?
If issued a visa is issued including the work placement, but the student does not subsequently undertake a placement, DMU will notify UKVI of the change in the expected end date and the visa will be shortened accordingly.

Other work opportunities
Full-time international students on a Tier 4 visa are also able to work up to 20 hours part-time per week while studying and up to 40 hours during the holidays. Our onsite recruitment agency Unitemps can help you find suitable part-time work at the university and in the local area.
You can also work part-time as a student ambassador for one of our faculities or departments. This is a paid role, and as a student ambassador you may take on a variety of jobs including helping at Open Days, assisting at Higher Education fairs and conducting campus tours.
